Witness-Obituary |
2 Nov 2017 [8] |
- Garrel Franklin Maybee, 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. He was born November 18, 1920, to Frank and Marie Maybee of Bear Creek (Rural Soldiers Grove), WI. Garrel was one of four children.
Garrel married Alma McDaniel at the Little Brown Church, July 3, 1938, in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Sebulah, Illinois, where Garrel worked cutting timber while Alma took in boarders. One year later, they moved to North Clayton Ridge where they began farming. It was there that they purchased their first farm of 40 acres. Both worked the land as they started their family. Alma and Garrel were eventually parents to three children, Mary, Joyce, and Jack. As this young family grew, they soon made their home on Trout Creek, where they purchased a 250 acre farm in the valley. They spent 70 years together on the farm working hard and entertaining friends and family. After Alma passed 6 years ago, Garrel spent 5 and 1/2 more years on the farm before receiving excellent care at the Sannes Skogdalen Heim Nursing Home, over the past 8 months.
Garrel was known as a person who enjoyed hard work and conversation. Before his father and mother settled in the Soldiers Grove area, he moved to several places. As he grew into a young man he enjoyed participating in and watching athletics. In fact, he participated in the WIAA State Track Meet. After marrying the love of his life, he took pride in working his land and enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. He was an avid fisherman and loved to hunt. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Soldiers Grove, where he and Alma were active all their lives. His hard work and faith helped get him through the Great Depression. Garrel always attributed his success and ability to overcome adversity to the fact that he and Alma were such a great team. In addition to working the land on their farm, they milked cows for 51 years. Later in his farming career, he sold Pioneer Seed Corn. Garrel was interested in local history and could site many significant events that took place in Soldiers Grove and surrounding areas. Little did he know that he was responsible for many significant events, activities that his family will always remember, like camping trips, hayrides, etc. He and Alma were proud of their three children and their families: Mary Campbell and husband, Richard (deceased),of Soldiers Grove; Joyce Banta (deceased) and husband, Geof, of Viroqua and Jack Maybe and wife, Pam, of Blue Springs, MO.
Garrel has 9 grandchildren: Brian (Vicki) Campbell of Soldiers Grove, Carmen (Dan) Phelps of LaCrosse, Stacey (Jamie)Nutter of Fennimore, Jeffrey (Gale) Banta of Aurora, IL, Steve (Cindy) Banta of Kingsland, GA, Brent (Sue) Banta of Wisconsin Rapids, Wendy (Shannon) Davies of Grain Valley, MO, Misty Floersch, of Olathe, KS, and Ashley (Brandon) Bosworth of Overland Park, KS.
