She has also maintained close relationships with her childhood friends from Malad, Idaho. She loved all. She has been active throughout her life in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she has held many positions in the Young Women's, Relief Society presidency, Ward Organist and Scouting. She has shown unending love, understanding, patience, and passion for her family. She has been the inspiration and a great example for her children, grandchildren and great-grand- children. She always saw the better side of all things, talked good of all people and was the first to forgive and give a hug. We pray that her example can be carried forth in each of our lives.
She is survived by four children, Kaylin (Kirk) Whiting, Eugene Allan (Diane) Barker, Gary Wayne Barker, Jon Orson (Shela) Barker; nine grandchildren; six great-grand-children; brothers, Joseph Ford Mabey and Garn Ford Mabey. Preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Orson Henry Mabey Jr.

oObit*13 April 2008  On 13 April 2008 at New Orleans, Louisiana, the obituary of Joseph Ford Mabey read: Dr. Joseph Ford Mabey, a retired physician and longtime New Orleans resident, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, April 4th, 2008. He was 88 years old. Dr. Mabey was born on June 11, 1919 in Centerville, Utah to Orson Henry Mabey and Esther Marie Ford. He was educated at the University of Utah and later at Temple University's School of Medicine, where he completed medical school in just three years so that he could serve his country during World War II. Dr. Mabey enlisted in the Army and served in the trauma center at the 61st General Hospital outside of Oxford, England. Following the war, he moved to New Orleans and became one of Alton Ochsner's first surgical residents. He completed his residency in 1950. Following his training, he moved to Jackson, Mississippi and joined the staff at Baptist Hospital. In 1951, he married Frances Hammond Gordon. They soon moved to Malad, Idaho where he joined his father serving as the town's family practitioner. There they had three children-Melanie, Monique and Joe. Dr. Mabey continued as the town physician for the next 16 years. In 1967, Dr. Mabey returned to New Orleans and to Ochsner Foundation Clinic after being recruited by Dr. Merrill Hines. Over the next 20 years, he ran Ochsner's Emergency Room and was a great innovator in treating patients in the burn unit. He established Ochsner's occupational medicine program and later began clinics at Union Carbide, Waterford and Avondale. In 1988, he retired from Ochsner and became Avondale's on-site physician in the Medical Department. He remained in that role until he retired from medicine at the age of 82. Dr. Mabey devoted his life to medicine. Even after he retired, he continued to have an avid interest in medical advances and in the quest for what "remains to be discovered". His favorite charities included: M.D. Anderson, where he was named to the Century Club; Stanford Hospital; and Ochsner, for which he was honored in May 2007 with the title of Doctor of Philanthropy for his contributions. He was a humble philanthropist, an avid reader with a wide variety of interests, and a food connoisseur. He held a true love for the City of New Orleans-for the culture, the food, and the wellbeing of its residents. Dr. Mabey will forever be remembered for his generosity and kind spirit. He had tremendous character and touched the lives of everyone he encountered. He is survived by a brother, Rex Garn Mabey, MD of Saint George, Utah; his daughter, Monique Ford Mabey, MD of San Francisco, CA: his son, Joseph Ford Mabey, Jr. and his daughter-in-law, Beth Ludlum Mabey of New Orleans, LA; and granddaughter, Courtney Hammond Pieczynski of Washington, D.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Gordon Mabey; sister, Jean Mabey Barker; brother, Orson Henry Mabey Jr., MD; and daughter, Melanie Hammond Mabey. Dr. Mabey was laid to rest in Anniston, Alabama at a private service with family and friends. When first moved to Newbury attended card evenings in Newbury Hall, played euchre (Jim never played, he clipped the tickets). Member Newbury C.W.I. Twice President and once Treasurer. Always entered handcraft and cooking competitions with success. Helped with Show Bays for the A.& P. Shows. Awarded the CWI Long Service Medal. Musical, played piano and sang solo on stage in local productions. Sang in Newbury C.W.I choir and drama group. Had her own piano and tried to teach me to play. Liked me to go over and help with the baking. Paid me pocket money for this. Made her own soap, using fat saved from meat until she had enough. It was boiled in the old copper and set in an old tin bath. I have a tin of buttons, tablecloths, plates, and a yellow teaset that belonged to her. Had a lot of sickness during her life. Rheumatic fever approx 1950 affected her heart. Got bronchitis most winters for her last 10 years or so and stayed with us sharing a bedroom with me. Developed diabetes in her last years. Attended Stoney Creek, Whakarongo School and District Centennial celebrating 1877-1977.1

(I remember the "Tanker stand", and the old dray standing in the corner near the drive) Never learned to drive (Nana could drive). Didn't have a car when they first moved to Newbury. Went by pushbike to Palmerston North to do the shopping "carried home 25lb flour on the back of the bike" Went on the bus once Mum was born. First car was a Morris 8. 2nd car was a Prefect, then Ford Anglia which Murray had when Nana died. Farm was leased to Don Lovelock who farmed next door for about 5 years.
