Burial was at O'Connor. Mrs. Murphy, whose maiden name was Quinn, was born on Prince Edward Island, seventy-eight years ago. She was married to John Murphy at Somerville, Mass., November 24, 1872. The family moved to O'Connor almost twenty-five years ago. The deceased was the mother of eleven children, seven of whom survive. The children are John, of Lincoln; Bert, of Scotia; Mrs. Jerry Murphy, of O'Connor; Mrs. John Green, of Sterling, Colo; Mrs. Art Naughtin, of Spalding; Joe and Will, of Greeley. All the children were here for the funeral. Other out-of-town relatives attending the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Carl Treptel, of Burwell; Patrick Quinn, of Burwell; Mrs. Hannah Quinn and daughter, of Elkhorn; and Mrs. Mary Brannet, of Burwell. Thirty-seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Murphy was one of the grand old pioneer women, beloved and admired by all who knew her.2,3 |

Thursday - Funeral Saturday For A Former O'Connor Resident -- Funeral services for Bernard P. Murphy (Bert) were held Saturday morning in St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. Burial was in Calvary cemetery in Westlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers, all nephews of the deceased, were Pat Cook and Gerald Cannon of Greeley, Paul Cook of Grand Island, Leo Cook of Lexington and Paul and Frank Murphy of Columbus. Mr. Murphy was born March 24, 1885 at Erenia, Nebr., to John and Margaret Quinn Murphy. The family moved to the O'Connor vicinity when he was a small boy and he grew to manhood there. On April 11, 1910 he and Miss Margaret Cook were married in St. Michael's church in Spalding. They farmed until 1928 when they moved to Scotia where he was employed by the State Highway Department. In 1943 the family moved to Grand Island. He was employed in the construction of the air base, at the ordnance plant and for several years before he retired at a furnace and sheet metal plant. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy observed their golden wedding anniversary this year. Their eight children all attended the funeral. They are John B. of San Francisco, Mrs. Mary Bellaires of Lincoln, Joe of Grand Island, Leonard W. of Scotia, Mrs. Margaret Sherrod of Stevensville, Tex., Nicholas F. of Fremont, Mrs. Theresa Foltz of Hooper and Sgt. Bernard Murphy of Cherry Point, N.C. Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, John, Joe, Arthur, Frank and an infant brother; two sisters, Mary Ann Murphy and Margaret Naughtin.2,4 |

She leaves to mourn her departure, John of Weiser, Idaho; Mrs. Carl Pritchard, Mike of the army, Frank of the Marines and Gerald at home. John is in Civilian Defense and was unable to attend the funeral. She had seven brothers and three sisters, a sister and 3 brothers having preceded her in death. Those living are John Murphy of Lincoln, Bert of Scotia, Joe of Columbus, Bill of Greeley, Mrs. John Green of Alliance, Mrs. Ann Murphy of Camos, Wash. Mrs. Ann Murphy was unable to be present at the funeral. Pall bearers were her nephews Frank and Paul Murphy of Columbus, Nick and Joe Murphy of Scotia, Edward Leonard and John Naughtin.2 |
