The 1790 Census of the United States was the very first census of the entire United States. The official start day for the 1790 census was 2 August 1790. All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. All responses were to reflect the household's status as of 2 August 1790, even if the status had changed between 2 August and the day of enumeration (i.e. children born after 2 August should not be listed, and people who died after 2 August should be included in the count). It is not known if every census taker adhered to this policy.
The enumeration was completed within nine months. The census was conducted throughout the original thirteen states and the Southwest Territory (the territory south of the Ohio River). The census was not conducted in Vermont until 1791, after that state's admission to the Union as the 14th state on March 4 of that year.
The 1790 Census records for several states (including: Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, and Virginia) were lost sometime between 1790 and 1830. Almost one third of the original census data have been lost or destroyed since their original documentation. These include some 1790 data from: Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Vermont; however, the validity and existence of most of these data can be confirmed in many secondary sources pertaining to the first census.

NOTE: In 1790, the census takers refused to cross the Genesee River
because of the presence of British troops in the area, so Jacob's family was never recorded.
However, he is known to have been living in the area of the Genesee at that time.
This census data is a reconstruction based on births and deaths recorded in Jacob's bible
and the marriage record of his eldest daughter.
