The Fourth Census of the United States took place in 1820. The official start day for the 1820 census was 7 August 1820. All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 7 August 1820, even if the status had changed between 7 August and the day of enumeration (i.e. children born after 7 August should not be listed, and people who died after 7 August should be included in the count). It is not known if every census taker adhered to this policy.
The count took thirteen months to complete. In 1820, there were a total of twenty-three states in the Union plus the District of Columbia. In addition, three US territories were also enumerated: Arkansas, Michigan, and Missouri.
All of the 1820 Census Records were lost from the state of New Jersey and the territories of Arkansas and Michigan. Partial census losses include half the counties of Alabama and the eastern counties of Tennessee.
