On 1 June 1870, the Bureau of the Census began taking the 9th decennial census of the United States. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 1 June 1870, even if the status had changed between 1 June and the day of enumeration (i.e. children born after 1 June should not be listed, and people who died after 1 June should be included in the count). It is not known if every census taker adhered to this policy.
Note: If the person is in the Maybee Society database, the database identification number appears in parentheses next to the census data.
Directions to the 1870 census takers can be found at this address: 1870 Census: Instructions to Enumerators
