(Mentioned) oObit | 17 August 2010 | Beth Jean Mears was mentioned in the obituary of Wallace Deane Mears on 17 August 2010 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah; Wallace Deane Mears, born October 18, 1921, rejoined his mother, father, and siblings on August 15, 2010 while surrounded by his family. Wally, as was known by his friends was a kind devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many. Wally is one of the greatest members of the "Greatest Generation". Prior to enlisting in the United States Navy in October of 1942, Wally worked at Hill Air Force Base and attended Utah State University (those days referred to as "The AC". While in the Navy served honorably as an aircraft mechanic. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific, spending time in Australia, New Guinea, Guadalcanal, and Honolulu, Hawaii. Shortly before the end of the war, he married the love of his life, Beth Jean Thompson. For the next sixty-six years, they were almost inseparable working as a team to build and beautify their home and raise two sons in love. Despite a life altering accident just one year following their marriage, Wally became the very definition of tenacity and character, moving forward with great enthusiasm where others would have faltered and succumbed to self pity. He is truly an example and inspiration to all who knew him. There is no more honest, moral man truly one of the last of the true Gentlemen. Following the war he attended the University of Utah and LDS Business College. He later took a position with UDOT-Utah Department of Transportation, where he worked for forty years and one month, retiring at the age of sixty-five. During leisure and free time, Wally enjoyed gardening with his wife. Together they maintained a perfectly manicured yard, a show piece of the neighborhood. He also enjoyed model railroading and creating and painting beautiful ceramic figurines which are displayed in and around their house. Even though aging and weakening with age and infirmity, wherever he and his bride were together he would watch after her helping her to navigate sidewalks, stairs, elevators, and the like, constantly showing love and respect to the very end. Wally was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert, mother Louise McFarlane Mears, his sisters Ruth and Martha (Ellis), and his brothers Clifford and Lynnwood. He is survived by his wife, Beth (Thompson), sons Brent (Diane), Steven (Rochelle), eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral Services will be provided on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Memorial Estates Mortuary, 3115 East Bengal Boulevard (7800 South), Cottonwood Heights, UT. Friends and family may call Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Mountain View and again one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery, "under the big pine tree" near the bench containing Wally and Beth's name.6 |
