James McLaughlin
M, #7656, b. 20 November 1828, d. 6 September 1912
Anecdote* | James McLaughlin was the fourth child of family that immigrated to Canada in 1832. He had been born in 1828 in Ireland. The family settled on what would be farmland approximately 4 miles west of Morganston the property has since been in the McComb family for many years and now, in 2004 members of that family still live there. When James was 8 years old he was in Colborne- I presume with his father- and he was offered a job of assisting to drive cattle to Kingston- approximately 70 miles away. It seems that this job was completed and he was sent back home- by foot and on his own. This would been in 1836 - when roads were mere wagon tracks through the rocks and trees. At some point James arrived in Belleville and went to the market - I can only presume that it was in the fall of the year. No doubt the child was tired, hungry and lost. He was observed by one of the merchants and since he didn't know where he was going, this gentleman took him home with him. All I know is the man's name was Mr. Maybee and that he lived north of Belleville. Thanks to this kind family, James stayed with them until he was 16 years old. Apparently the Maybee family came to visit someone in Codrington and James recognized that he was not too far from home. He left the Maybees and started to walk and found his family. His mother saw him coming, recognized him immediately, and ran to him. I am sure there as great rejoicing. This is not the end of the story. James returned to visit the Maybee family and married their daughter Phoebe. They lived in Hilton at some point on the property now owned (2004) by John and Frank Mutton, and I believe that is where my father Philip Elmo McLaughlin was born. James and Phoebe lived with my dad in the later years near Wooler. James died in 1912, and Phoebe in 1919 and are buried in McPhails Cemetary. Z. Jean McLaughlin-Cassan Dec. 19 2004.1

Anecdote* | Samuel Rose was born at Ernesttown in 1793, one year after Upper Canada was created a separate province. His father was a United Empire Loyalist, who, with his family, had to suffer hardships, endure privations and battle against difficulties, beyond anything his descendants can ever realize. Early in life he married Sarah Caton, and, hearing of a beautiful and fertile, but almost unpopulated country to the westward, the young couple determined to cast their lot in this new land. Accompanied by his devoted wife, Samuel Rose made his way through the Mohawk woods, Meyer's Creek later Moira River at "Meyer's Creek settlement" (now Belleville), and went back through the forest to the 5th concession of Sidney, where he had located two hundred acres of land (lot 28). Some years after his first wife died, he Margaret Simpson (nee Maybee) ; she had one son, John Simpson. "Father" Rose, as he was familiarly called, took an active part in the affairs of the country. He was only a youth of eighteen when the War of 1812 was declared, but he promptly shouldered a musket and served through the entire war, receiving a pension from the Government for his services, to the time of his death. He was a member of the Church of England in his early days, but Sidney was a Methodist community, and he later became a member of the Methodist Church, and his hospitable home was ever open to the itinerant preacher. He was a liberal contributor to the church, a kind neighbor and an upright, honored citizen. In politics he was a Conservative. He died on the old farm on the 5th concession that he had cleared and on which he had lived so long, at the ripe old age of eighty-seven. Charles W. Rose lives on and owns the old farm settled by his father nearly one hundred years ago. The same hospitality obtains at the old home that always characterized it. The one hundred acres owned by Mr. Rose is in a high state of cultivation, and his pleasant home is one of the most comfortable. His wife is a daughter of the respected George M. Ketcheson. The Rose family attend the Methodist church. In politics Mr. Rose, like his father before him, is a Conservative.4
