Anecdote* | William Wood ...was born in Connecticut, November 11, 1824. He received a good district-school education, and at an early age began to work on a farm. He had the misfortune to break his arm; and, as there were no skilled surgeons in his vicinity at that time, it was not properly set, and troubled him for the remainder of his life. He learned the shoemaker's trade, and first worked at Grand Gorge. He married Sarah M. Fredenburgh, who was born May 10,1830, the daughter of John and Fanny (Maybie) Fredenburgh. The latter was born in Schoharie County, and was one of the early settlers of Gilboa, buying one hundred and fifty-six acres of land at Grand Gorge, where he was very prosperous as a farmer. He had a family of sixteen children. He was a Republican in politics, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Fanny Maybie was a daughter of John Maybie [sic], a farmer and one of the early settlers, who raised six children.1 | |

Monday, April 15, in the Nicholson Funeral Home for Mrs. Dorothy K. Mabie of Hyde. The 26-year-old Mrs. Mabie died yesterday morning in the Clearfield Hospital. She was born Feb. 8, 1942, a daughter of Cyrus and Mildred Maines. She is survived by her husband, Allen Mabie, and four children: Donna, Lillian, Bonnie and Cyrus. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Mildred Maines of Hyde and these brothers and sisters: Mrs. Leonard (Verda) Graffius. Woodland; William Maines, Osccola Mills; Mrs. Clarence (Roscanne) McBride, West Decatur; Mrs. Lawrence (Virginia) Stccle, Hawk Run; Mrs. Hugh (Vera) Martell, Clearfield; and Mrs. Raymond (lona) Spade, Irvona. She was preceded in death by her father in 1963. The funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. John Gangaware, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Smith. Burial will follow in the Bradford Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock tonight, Sunday and until time of services Monday.5 |
