Anecdote* George Monthan (who is 94 years old and sharp as a tack) told me the following:
"After ATC, Ed and Dick were put in a squadron as Ensigns to be Weapons Officers, rather than pilots, for a big, twin engine bomber, carrier-based, that was planned to carry atomic weapons. Dick deployed to the Mediterranean, where he died in November 1951 while on a catapult shot off the carrier when his plane crashed into the sea.
"The Navy never recovered his body, but his family held a service in Des Moines, Iowa. I was able to get a plane to fly in a raging snowstorm to Des Moines. His father met me at the airport, and I stayed with them for a day or so."8
